Intracytoplasmic Injection of Sperm Morphologycally Selected (IMSI)
This is an innovative treatment in Spain which involves the application of an advanced microscopy system to view sperm 6000 times larger than their real size as compared to the 400 increases provided by ICSI. By having an appreciably clearer vision of the morphology of the sperm, this allows a more accurate selection of those to be used in the microinjection procedure.
First, ovarian stimulation takes place through a daily treatment of hormones and the use of ultrasound scans to check the development of several ovarian follicles. Once they reach a suitable stage of maturity, the ovocytes are recovered by follicular injection guided by pelvic ultrasound scan (and provision of adequate antiseptics and analgesics). This procedure is conducted in a dedicated room and subsequent observation to ensure there are no complications. We provide individual rooms controlled by health personnel for the patient and her companion, until she can return to her home a few hours later. Once the ovocytes have been extracted, they are combined in the laboratory with the sperm prepared through training techniques either in a natural way (IVF) or through intracytoplasmic injection (ICSI).
From this moment cells begin to divide and forming embryos in a period from 48 to 72 hours. This is the time when the best quality embryo/s are chosen to be transferred to the mother’s uterus through a simple treatment. The remaining good quality embryos are cryopreserved for future use.
